Telangana vs Andhra: Detailed Analysis

Well now... Since Telangana state is declared to be formed, now there comes the million dollar question. Which one is great? Telangana or Andhra. Which state has got more power to execute? To have a detailed outlook on the states and their capabilities, this post is drafted.

Overview of Telangana
Telangana is formed with 10 districts. It shall now have districts Hyderabad, Mahabubnagar, Rangareddy, Warangal, Khamman, Adilabad, Medak, Nalgonda, Nizamabad and KarimNagar. The population of Telangana is over 3.5 crore, the new state comprising mostly the areas of the princel Nizam state will have 17 Lok Sabha seats and 119 Assembly seats.

Of the three regions of the state of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana has the largest area, with 114,800 square kilometres (44,300 sq mi). The Deccan plateau is drained by two major rivers, the Godavari and the Krishna. 69% of the Krishna River and 79% of the Godavari River catchment area is in Telangana region.

The Singareni Collieries Company excavates coal for industrial purposes and for thermal power stations. The power generated is supplied to the entire of South India. There are limestone deposits in the region, which cater to cement factories. Telangana has other resources such as bauxite and mica.

However the Commercial hub and 6th largest city, Hyderabad is generating the largest revenue.

Overview of Andhra
Andhra Pradesh has a population of 4.9 crores (excluding Telangana). It can be represented in Rayalaseema, Uttharandra and Coastal Andhra.Rayalaseema comprises the 4 districts of Kurnool,Chittoor, Kadapa and Anantapur. Uttarandhra consists of the 3 districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam. Coastal Andhra comprises the 6 districts of East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore.

It has the second-longest coastline of 972 km (604 mi) among the states of India. Two major rivers, the Godavari and the Krishna, run across the state. It is historically called the "Rice Bowl of India". More than 77% of its crop is rice; Andhra Pradesh produced 17,796,000 tonnes (19,616,732 short tons) of rice in 2006. The state's most populous cities are Visakhapatnam, Tirupathi, Guntur, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry and Nellore.

Now lets debate between the two states.

Telangana has the highest catchment of the rivers of Andhra Pradesh as a whole. So there may be an added advantage to telangana state. However the Congress Working Committee has assures that Polavaram project will have high status from the central. So this means there may not be any issue with river water flow.

With hyderabad being central hub for next 10 years, its revenue shall be equally shared by both the states, leading to same advantage for both the states.

But Andhra having visakhapatnam port and Krishna patnam port seems to be having an edge. With industries growing up very vastly in Vizag, Nellore and Kakinada, overall it seems to be like Coastal Andhra has higher advantage.

Singareni may be unique in Telangana but its most of the production is useful in NTPC Ramagundam Power Plant, which serves to entire South India.

Last but the Greatest, Andhra seems to be confident with Tirumala, the largest revenue maker in Asia.
