Tatkal Booking Rules and Latest News July 2013

Tatkal booking is one of the most top note feature of Indian Railways. To benefit the unplanned travellers, Indian Railways has introduced the scheme few years ago.

During the last few years the scheme has been revised several times to prevent misuse of the scheme and eliminate any fradulent activities. The ministry of railways is striving best to give the most to the common man.

Recent Rules and News for Tatkal booking

1. The Advance Reservation Period (ARP) of Tatkal scheme is reduced from two days to one day excluding the day of journey from the train originating station. For example, if train is to depart from the originating station on the second of the month, the Tatkal quota booking for that particular train will open at 10:00 hrs on the first of the month from originating station.

2. For booking Tatkal e-tickets, each of the passengers (mandatory for at least one passenger) can enter his/her ID proof type and number against his/her name in reservation form, which is to be used for travel. These details will be printed on the ERS/VRM as well as in the reservation chart.

3.During the journey, at least one passenger, whose identity card number has been indicated on the ticket, will have to produce original proof of identity indicated on the ticket, failing which all the passengers booked on the ticket shall be treated as travelling without ticket and charged accordingly.

4. Maximum of four passengers per PNR can be booked on Tatkal e-tickets.

5. No refund will be granted on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal ticket except in case of circumstance mentioned in para 2 of instructions contained in Commercial Circular no. 53 of 2006 issued vide letter no. 2006/TGI-I/20/P/Tatkal, dated 30.06.2006. Incase of Waitlisted Tatkal tickets, the money shall be refunded for e-tickets and for tickets purchased in counter, the cancellation charges shall be applied

6. Partial cancellation of Tatkal e-tickets is allowed but at least one passenger with ID card printed on ERS/VRM should not be cancelled. On cancellation of all the passengers whose ID card details is printed on ERS/VRM, all the passengers on that e-ticket will be cancelled.

7. Authorized ID – The personal Photo Identification card falling in any of these nine categories
  • Voter Identification Card
  • Driving License
  • PAN Card
  • Photo ID card issued by Central Government or State Government which are having serial number
  • Student Identity Card with photograph issued by recognized School/College for their students
  • Nationalized Bank Passbook with photograph
  • Credit Cards issued by Banks with laminated photograph
  • Unique Identification Card "Aadhaar” For Non-Indians, their Country's Passport will constitute sole authorized ID
8. Ration card will be accepted as proof of identity for undertaking journey under Tatkal scheme only if the passenger whose photograph is available on the ration card is travelling.

Indian Railways: Advance Reservation Time Limit reduced

The time limit for Advanced Reservation has been reduced by the Indian Railways. Ministry of Railways has decided to change the existing time limit for advance reservation by trains shall be reduced from 120 days to 60 days (excluding the date of journey).
As a part of this, they have issued a circular 34 of 2013. The change shall be effective from 01 st May 2013.

The rules are as follows
  1. With effect from 01.05.2013, the ARP (Advance Reservation Period) will be of 60 days (excluding the day of journey) and bookings will be done accordingly. 
  2. There will be no change in case of certain day time express trains like Taj Express, Gomti Express etc, where lower time limits for advance reservations are at present in force.
  3. There will be no change in case of limit of 360 days for Foreign Tourists.

IRCTC SMS based Mobile Booking

Now Book your train tickets using Mobile Phone, anywhere and anytime WITHOUT using Internet connection. Train passengers will be able to use their mobile phones to book tickets through a simple text-messaging-based-SMS facility or a menu-based dialling service –USSD service. Currently, only registered IRCTC users can use these services.

    1. For SMS Bookings, send a Booking SMS in specified format with information of Date of Journey, Class , Train Number and Passenger Details. You shall receive Seat Availability.

    2. In the second SMS make the Payment, which can be initiated in either two ways:-
      • Using Mobile Money Identifier MMID* and one-time password (OTP) as received from Bank for registered Mobile Number.
      • Using PrePaid Wallet Cards or mWallets.

    3. Booking confirmation SMS is sent by IRCTC.

    * MMID generation is a single click process available with more than 26 Indian Banks covering over 90% of the total banking subscriber base. The banks for the same are listed at    http://www.npci.org.in/bankmember.aspx

    * “OTP” is a One Time Password generated and provided by your respective bank.

    1. Dial designated number, you shall receive a Menu Based Screen dialling. Select 'book tickets' option, select 'reservation' (user is prompted to enter his IRCTC user ID once only), enter details     (date of journey, station, train no, class, etc)

    2. Enter mPIN for authorizing payment through mobile wallet
